Providing opportunities in the arts. A conversation with the Founder

Amber Kurzenbaum

How did the idea of Giving Art to Missoula develop?

GAM has developed over conversations about how expensive art materials have become; the limited physical space we have to practice and hone out various artistic skills, and how some of us literally have such small spaces to store art supplies.

Via this conversation we heard about free art supply closets and stores around the world. It seemed as though it was time for our ultra-artistic community of Missoula, Montana to hop on board.

Where did you get the idea for the name GAM?

The name was developed from a past business idea and wanting to stick with the acronym of GAM for Giving Art to Missoula. I liked that a GAM can be a name for a group of whales. It is also a name for conversation. So, we GAM about things.

Having a whale as a logo in Montana really tickled me. Whales in Missoula who would think of that?

Did you do anything special to prepare for the Free Art Materials (FAM) room?

Yes, I continued education independently on how to run a business prior to seeking a physical location. Nonprofit courses led to a certificate in Nonprofit Leadership. Communicating and establishing professional relationships with other nonprofits and free art supply programs continues as we grow. I wanted unique ways to strengthen our team, ideas, growth and operations. We really want to provide the best for our city.

How do you feel now that you have opened, and operations are ongoing?

GAM has filled my heart. I have always strived to help artists grow and love to promote local business. My years of experience in sales, arts, and management prepared me for this. I couldn’t be more thankful. The community’s response has us overjoyed to continue to evolve and the opportunities seem boundless.
